Safia Barakzai BVSc, MSc, Cert ES (Soft Tissue), DESTS, Dipl. ECVS, MRCVS
RCVS and European Specialist in Equine Surgery Senior Lecturer in Equine Surgery
Royal (DICK) School of Veterinary Studies. University of Edinburgh

Panellist: Henry Tremaine, Senior Lecturer in Equine Surgery at University of Bristol

Safia BarakzaiSinusitis is a common disorder in horses and ponies in the UK.  Whilst an 'umbrella' diagnosis of sinusitis is relatively easy to make, finding out the cause can be much more difficult. This talk will examine which diagnostic modalities are easy to perform in general practice as well as when it may be useful to refer cases for more complex work-up.  Treatment options and prognosis after treatment will also be covered.

Key learning points for this session:
- Aeitiology of sinusitis
- Clinical signs
- Diagnosis: diagnostic modalities available and when they are indicated
- Diagnosis: how to differentiate between different types of sinus pathology
- Treatment options available
- Prognosis after treatment

Safia Barakzai qualified from Bristol University in 1998 and spent 2 years in general practice before a short stint as the equine radiographer at the University of Liverpool, Leahurst Equine Hospital. She then moved to the R(D)SVS and spent 3 years as the Horserace Betting Levy Board Resident in Equine Surgery, under the supervision of Prof Paddy Dixon. After finishing her residency, she stayed on at the Dick as a Lecturer and then Senior Lecturer in Equine Surgery.

She spent a year on sabbatical working at the equine clinic, Murdoch University, Western Australia but returned to her position at the Dick Vet in September 2011.

She is an associate member of the ECVDI and is on the Editorial Consultants Board for Equine Veterinary Journal and the Editorial Review Board for Veterinary Surgery. Her research focuses on the equine upper respiratory tract and imaging of the equine skull.
