WebLeC online CPD training for horse vets

Thursday 24 May 2012, 7.30pmmerial

A practical guide to strategic worming of horses. Sponsored by Merial

Professor Jacqui Matthews BVMS PhD MRCVS Principal Veterinary Parasitologist, Moredun Research Institute

A qualified veterinarian, Jacqui has specialised in large animal roundworms and developed an extensive research programme in vaccines and drug resistance.

She has published and spoken extensively, has taught parasitology at three Jacqui Matthewsof the UK veterinary schools and delivered CPD programmes in the UK and abroad. She is consultant parasitologist to a number of equine charities and is a member of the UK Veterinary Products Committee

This session will cover:

- The threat of dewormer resistance and the use of targeted parasite control programmes to avoid this.

- The complex issue of equine worms, focusing on their lifecycles, from gut to pasture and back again.

- With emphasis on ‘best-practice’, Jacqui will explain how overuse and inappropriate use of dewormers triggers an adaptation in worms in response to selection pressure, which increases the likelihood of the development and spread of resistance. Over time, parasites that survive dewormer treatments pass on their resistant genes, perpetuating resistance and reducing efficacy of drugs in the long term.

- Targeted dosing based on the results of faecal egg counts to ensure that the correct drugs are used effectively.

- To ensure that dewormers are effective for the future, we need to understand which products are effective on yards, consider good pasture management and understand the concept of ‘refugia’ to promote ‘dilution’ of resistant parasites.
